Slave and Citizen main

Frank Tennenbaum's Slave and Citizen's, main claim is that slaves in the southern Western Hemisphere and slaves in the northern Western Hemisphere were treated very differently. People of color had very different positions,opportunities, and advantages in Brazil and Cuba than they did in the United States. Even though light colored people had preference, any color person had the possibility of owning hs or her own slaves. An example that he used, was that of Tom Eubanks book of life in Brazil. In America the white race was dominant and all colored people were slave, it didn't matter if they were light or dark. In Brazil and Cuba slaves were given the opportunity of working on their own account and saving to buy their freedom. Also, colored people were the carpenters, aritisians, engineers and mechanics. In the U.S all colored people were slaves, farm workers, cotton pickers and had no opportunities for growth or freedom. In other words they were not part of the community and " were not given any rights as humans." In the U.S keeping slaves seemed to be an economic reason.  Slaves were making money for their masters. All money made was profitable.
I find this very interesting because being not so far from each other Brazil Cuba and the U.S had very different views. In Brazil and Cuba where the spaniards and Portuguese controlled they gave moral and human rights to the slaves, they knew they were not to be held as slaves until their death.
